Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) is the world’s largest celebration of the innovators and job creators, who launch startups that bring ideas to life, drive economic growth and expand human welfare. It has been three years that AmCham Tajikistan has been hosting GEW. GEW 2015 took place during Nov 16th – Nov 22nd in Tajikistan. The week consisted of various engaging events taking place in Dushanbe, Khujand, Khorog and Kulob connecting participants to potential investors and mentors.

The GEW 2015 Tajikistan started November 16 with a Round Table in Khujand, Sughd Region, named “Entrepreneurship-Innovative Vision on Economic Development”. The event was organized by AmCham Tajikistan, with support of Regional Government Administration of Sughd region, Tcell, and the financial support of the KfW Development Bank in Tajikistan.

On November 17, 2015 there were three events taking place simultaneously in various cities of Tajikistan in honor of Global Entrepreneurship Week. Speed mentoring events that took place in Khorog and Kulob brought together prospective entrepreneurs among students and professionals from different sectors of business to inform the students about new possibilities and exciting opportunities. American Corners in eight different cities of Tajikistan hosted videoconference with IT entrepreneur and Investor Sergey Gribov (USA). During this webinar, Sergey talked about his experience as a tech entrepreneur, the struggles of creating a start-up and overcoming them. Furthermore, students and visitors of American corners had a chance to share their doubts and ask questions directly from Sergey.

November 18 was marked by a spectacular event, the International Entrepreneurship Forum and Exhibition of products and services of member companies of American Chamber of Commerce in Tajikistan. The event consisted of opening remarks by Nigina Anvari, Deputy Chairman of the State Committee on Investment and State Property Management of the Republic of Tajikistan, Leslie Hayden - Charge d’Affaires of the US Embassy, Hugh Philpott - UK Ambassador in Tajikistan, Gulanor Atobek – Chairman of Board of Directors at AmCham Tajikistan, and proceeded with speeches of the key speakers from the USA including Vanessa Beary - Senior Advisor on Youth Entrepreneurship at the US Department of State, Alex Long-Country Lead , Public Policy and Government Relations at Asia Pacific Region Google, Karin Shipman, CEO of EGI development, and Daniel Zaretsky, Director of GEW 2015 in Tajikistan.

After the opening remarks, three panel discussions were held: 1) Women: Leaders in Business; 2) Youth, Startups, Innovation and Technologies; 3) Investment into startups: Angel Investment, Seed Investment, Startup support. During the panel discussions, international experts, leaders in government, leaders of development organizations and leaders in business discussed their vision on development of entrepreneurial activity in Tajikistan, and challenges to development in all key directions, and proposed their recommendations. During the Forum, there was also an Expo of products and services of AmCham member companies at the National Library. The aim of the event was to support entrepreneurial activity, tech entrepreneurship, and support to businesses. By inviting international experts in youth entrepreneurship, tech sector, and international development sector, exchange of ideas took place, which helped to identify the key areas of development for the directions mentioned above. International Entrepreneurship Forum was organized and funded by AmCham Tajikistan, the US Embassy in Tajikistan, UK Embassy in Tajikistan, KFW Development Bank, OSCE, Tcell, AITE, Asia-Plus, and EFCA.

On November 19 startups of Tajikistan presented their projects to both local and international mentors and investors, which were organized by AmCham Tajikistan and Association of Innovative and Technological Entrepreneurship. This event took place in Sheraton Hotel and brought together the most active young entrepreneurs together with mentors and organizations. At the end of the session, startups and investors had an opportunity to communicate, where startupers could ask questions and get a feedback from the mentors and the investors.

In addition to this, two Master Classes took place in various locations in Dushanbe. Alex Long, Country Lead, Public Policy and Government Relations at Asia Pacific Region Google gave a presentation at Tcell Conference Hall. Based on his experience working at Google’s headquarters, and several additional offices over the past five years, Alexander D. Long introduced Google’s innovative organizational culture to the youth , including entrepreneurs , IT-specialists and guests who summed up to over 150 people.

            Another Master Class was on “Startup’s risks and ways of attracting investment into your startups” led by Ozodkhon Davlatshoev, the CEO of Tethys Petroleum in Tajikistan.

            Later on Nov 19th, a webinar with the Fisher College of Business-Ohio State University took place, which was led by Vadim Abanin at American Corner, Dushanbe. The webinar touched upon topics as Business Education in US, Admission to MBA program to Fisher School of Business and the programs that the school offers.

November 20

The last day of the Global Entrepreneurship Week was a remarkable one as well. Women’s Business Forum and Entrepreneurship Expo organized by the US Embassy in cooperation with the State Committee on Investment and State Property Management of the Republic of Tajikistan, the USAID, OSCE, UN Women, OSI, etc. took place in Ismaili Center. The event consisted of the opening remarks by the members of the government’s state investment committee, state women’s committee, and Charge d’Affaires of the US Embassy, a panel discussion involving a keynote address by Karin Shipman, CEO of EGI Development , and key leading female entrepreneurs in the country, followed by the a training pavilion, a fashion show and entrepreneurship expo, highlighting products produced by women in design and the handicraft, textile, agro-produce, and IT sectors. The aim of the event was to support female entrepreneurial activity, especially in rural areas, elevating the level of awareness of such activity to all heads of diplomatic mission, international organizations, as well as local and foreign investors.

Nov 20th also featured study tours for students to FINCA Tajikistan, Tсell, and Sheraton Dushanbe Hotel where students studying in the following three different sectors had an opportunity to see the companies and get an overall understanding of the companies’ operations and organizational atmosphere.

The Closing Ceremony of the Global entrepreneurship Week took place at the Sheraton Dushanbe Hotel. The Executive Director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Tajikistan, Ilhom Aliev, said a few words summarizing the whole week and thanking all those who contributed to the GEW. There were over 80 guests, including the organizers, all the partnering organizations and member companies of AmCham Tajikistan.
